give someone a shot

Hi,

what does 'give someone a shot' mean? Does the term exist?

'The record producer tells Mary he wants to sign her for his label. Mary tells her friend about it and wants to give him a shot.'

Thank you very much.

If you "give someone a shot" you give them an opportunity, even though you are not certain of success. You can give a new restaurant a shot by eating there once to see if you like it. You can go out on a blind date with your coworker's friend, and give him a shot.

I have always thought this is a metaphor, offering the person another chance to 'shoot' the target again.
