Also need help with the following sentence:

"as Polly was very lively the intention was to give her the run of the young men."

I don't understand what it means to give sb the run...

A more common use of this phrase would be "to give the dog the run of the house." It means they are free to use the entire house and do with it whatever they would like to do (usually even if that means destroying things).
