Give sb a lesson or teach sb a lesson

in one cloze, i have got two choices--give sb a lesson and teach sb a lesson. we learned from our teachers that both of them were the same and could replace each other. now what i doubt is not that they are the same or not, but is there a set phrase like "give sb a lesson". i was really confused.

it's very kind of you to give me help

here is the example

one of my team members suggested that we show disapproval to them as they performed. finally i said, "let's ____ them a lesson."

(this is the sentence from the passage.)

two of the four choices puzzled me. i learned give sb a lesson can be used to express the same meaning as teach sb a lesson.

I have never heard "give somebody a lesson" used to mean "teach somebody a lesson."

Please take the time to use capital letters as appropriate in your posts. Thank you!
