Give onto...

Hi teachers,

Would it be possible to say "give onto something" to mean "face onto something"?

Looks out onto would be correct. In Spanish, the verb for 'to give' is used. Maybe you're familiar with that.

Could you help me clear my confusion, Philip?

I asked, "Would it be possible to say "give onto something" to mean "face onto something"?" You answered, "Looks out onto would be correct"? Did you mean, "Looks out onto would be correct, but the others would not"?

I only gave what sounds natural to me. The English-speaking world is wide, and expressions differ from place to place, especially with prepositions. Even in the U.S. A colleague from the east coast mentioned one day that she had "put some water up". I had no idea what she meant, because I would have said "put some water on" (the stove to heat for tea).
