Maybe you're thinking of put your nose to the grindstone, meaning get to work and be serious about it (when the work is not pleasant).

Not actually. But this I learn from you.

The one I mentioned is something I remember hearing here and there in my place .
It was used to convey one should be prepared to strain oneself physically or/and mentally while being young in order to do well later.

Only when we communicate with native speakers, just as I do now, I learn I need to unlearn many.
