Give it up for...

Hi

I am not sure but I think I heard the announcer say this:

Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for the very bright young star...

Does "give it up for" mean clap?

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks, Ozzourti!

I just checked and noticed that many dictionaries say that it's a slang phrase. Is it the case in reality or is it just informal and fine among educated audience?

It's definitely informal. I would not recommend saying it to a well-educated audience.
