Vocabulary

give it (a) meaning

Hi,

Could you please advise whether "a" should be inserted in the sentence?

"The best way to remember something is to give it (a) meaning."

I looked it up in a dictionary, which says that "meaning" is both countable and uncountable. Therefore, I am not sure about the article.

Thank you

You could argue both ways, but I prefer 'a' because I think a more specific meaning would be better for remembering. Clive

Hotmaleto give it (a) meaning.
to give it a meaning ~ to assign to it a specific meaning
to give it meaning ~ to make it meaningful to yourself in some way

The second is more general than the first.
