Give him the brushing

Do you mind giving him the brushing?

I used this to mean 'do you mind brushing his teeth'. Does the sentence at least make sense, and is the use 'the brushing' ok?

Top answer

No, I would not understand that. Would you mind brushing his teeth? Brushing could be for hair or teeth.

Thank you.

Ok. the sentence is not correct if it stands alone. But what if you ask a person to brush someone, and he understood what he should do. Then would the sentence, re-asking him once more, be acceptable as a following sentence with the use of 'the brushing'?

The only sentence that is natural for me is one that involves a regular chore ( brushing ) but they cannot do it themselves.

Give the dog a good brushing.

My son is only 3 and the doctor advised us to brush his teeth, so the brushing became our chore everyday. I think then the sentence would be fine in our context, have I interpreted it well?

While you're at it, you can give his shoes a brushing, too. They are caked with mud.
