Give directions and tell sb how to get to a place

Hi teachers.

I just have a question about the difference between 'get directions' and tell sb how to get to a place'

I have always thought that they were somewhat different but now I am not sure.

I asked them for directions to the airport.

I asked them how to get to the airport.

He gave me directions.(or I got directions from him.)

He told me how to get there.

Are they totally interchangeable or not?

Thank you in advance.
