As Clive says, 'She had a baby' is the most common phrase, but when it is a special event as in your example, 'gave birth' is probably more appropriate: 'At the age of 39, she finally gave birth (to a daughter)'. (If you do not say 'son' or 'daughter', you need no object, since 'child' is redundant.)
