Give a kick

Hello everybody.

What does ' give a kick' mean in the following?

When the teacher asks a question, he makes no answer the first and the second times and the third time he gives a kick.

Does it mean he becomes exited? But it sounds nonsense.

Thanks so much.

Again, this was written in Italian by a man who died in 1908. It was translated from the 39th edition in 1915 by a Bostonian woman who normally did Russian. It makes no sense to me, either, unless it means exactly what it says, that he jerked his leg such that his foot extended quickly.

  • Why he would do that is not at all clear.
  • The phrase "to give a kick" appears in the OED only in this literal sense.
