Give a dog a bone

Hi

I don't know how it is usually interpreted. But here is my personal interpretation. Give a dog a bone so that he can keep himself busy and don't pay any attention what is happening around (i.e. he won't bark at, say, intruders). Does it make any sense? Please let me know. Thanks.
