Give

Hello, dear Gurus and Members!
Happy new year!
I need some help on the verb "give".

The guard gave him to understand that he could move only if he was going to write.

**********
Does this sentence above mean the "The guard let him understand ~"?
And the form, "give someone to do something" mean "let someone do something"?

If so, then "He gave me to remember that home was not far away" means that "He made(let) me rememer that home was not far away"?

This isn't used much in the US, but we interpret it as "he let the other person know". There may be some question as to how the information was passed on, but I'm not sure about that.

pructus"give someone to do something" mean "let someone do something"? ... He gave me to remember ...
The idiom cannot be extended beyond the verb that goes with it: to give to understand. (Not to give to [any other verb].)

to give [me / him / ...] to understand ~ to make known to [me / him / ...] ~ to inform [me / him / ...

Thanks so much CJ!!
As I am out of reach from my computer and this is my mobile, so I cannot read well now.
Before I read your explanations further and absorb your input....

How about "He gave me to remember that ~"?

No. As CJ explained, 'give sb to ...' works only with 'understand'.

Thanks a lot, CJ....

Though it seems difficult, I will ponder upon why the construction works only for the verb "understand"...
