Some of the chemical names need changing. Sulphur compounds: mercaptans, dialkylsulphides, dialkyldisulphides, napthene sulphides and thiophenes, with hydrogen and catalyst, give hydrogen sulphide and the appropriate hydrocarbons. Nitrogen compounds: pyridine, quinoline and pyrrole with hydrogen give ammonia and the appropriate hydrocarbons.

Alan.esNo problem with 'corresponding hydrocarbons' - must be plural - good amendment. However I don't agree that the plural given in (a) is correct, for me it's mercaptans.Yes, you are right! I am buffled. There are alkanes, dithianes, boranes and spiranes -- but obviously mercaptans are an exception. Do you know any reason for this strange behaviour
Alan.esI'm not sure but I think the explanation is chemical rather than English. There is only one mercaptan and all the others are derivatives of mercaptan whereas the alkanes, boranes, etc are families of compoundsHm. I do not see the chemical point with regards to silane, borane, mercaptan. All do name a specific compound and can be used for the whole
