Gifting me with a memeno

Dear all,

I saw the following sentences in our WhatsApp group. This was written by an English postgraduate holder in my part of the town. Here could you please tell me whether the usages "join the function", "gifting me with a memento" and "gesture of love" are correct?

"Due to my current assignment with MDI Murshidabad West Bengal I was not able to join the function. I take this opportunity to thank the family and program organisers for gifting me with a memento. I appreciate this gesture of love and hope to participate next year."
