Gifting

Hi
I am reading a text about BitTorrent Technology, and there
are some sentences or verbs tha Ii cant understand. Here they are:
"This paper is concerned with gifting: giving not motivated by a direct, immediate, or
obvious benefit"

And

"For example they gain the ability to exploit resources which they would otherwise be unable
to access."

In first paragragh, I cant understand what "gifting" means ? and what is the purpose of " giving not motivated by a direct, immediate, or obvious benefit"

And about second sentence , I cant understand it at all ?!

Hi Developer. The word "gifting" seems to be a new one (new words enter our language all the time), so the second part of the sentence is an explanation of it. gifting = giving not motivated by a direct, immediate or obvious benefit (in other words, giving someone something, but not because you think you will get something in retur n ) The second sentences means " for example, they become able to exploit resources which they wouldn't be able to get without *** " (*** = whatever was in the previous sentence).

  • S - I just had a look at the paper - I'm really impressed if it's just these two sentences that you don't understand!

Let me give you another paragraph of this paper :

"In many communities, and file-sharing communities are no exception, most members
value the goods obtained during participation higher than their participation costs. Thus,
when these members contribute to the community, their contribution can be explained as
trading, rather than gifting. "
