gift cards/certificates/money

In 2006, the most popular gifts Americans gave each other were gift cards/certicates.

Are gift cards and gift certificates all but identical? I think they are equal to "gift coupon/money," which are what we call here. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

They are identical in purpose. The place I get my hair cut gives an actual certficiate - nicely printed on a piece of paper. I present the certificate, they physically write on it how much I used and what the balance is, and I put it back in my purse for the next visit.

  • Most retail stores have gift cards that you can swipe at a register like a credit card, but instead of saying "Visa" or "Mastercard," it will have cute pictures or the store logo.

A gift certificate if it's on paper.

A gift card if it's a plastic card. (Although those will be called gift certificates too.)
