Gibe?

Is it correct to say 'to make a gibe at something' or is it always 'to make a gibe at someone'?

Is there a word or term that means the same that can be used for a thing?

In what kind of context?
Do you mean eg you want to mock or taunt a chair?

To make a gibe at an idea, an opinion, a way of doing something. That sort of thing.

I'd have to see the expression in a context to know if it sounded OK.
But remember, as I said, it's an uncommon word.

Anon, you have been told that it's more normally spelt jibe. Is there any particular reason for your continuing to spell it gibe?

No reason at all, maybe because in Clive's first response it was spelled gibe itself when I saw it so I just failed to notice. Anyway, spelling is not my concern here. I'm trying to understand the correct use of the expression.
