Gherkin

Hi.

I know we use gherkin for the cucumber that is preserved in vinegar.

What do we call a cucumber which is preserved in brine to be used as pickles? Is it also called gherkin?

BTW, do Americans eat gherking frequently? When was the last time you used gherkin personally?

Thank you very much for your help and time

Regards

Hi Yes, in the UK they are just called gherkins (or pickled gherkins) On an obscure note, my dad sometimes calls them "Waddies" which I think he may have picked up during armed service, from US servicemen. There seems to have been an American farmer with that nickname who was famous for his barrel-cured gherkins Regards, Dave

In AmE, "pickle" is the term for a pickled cucumber. Most other items are "pickled X".
