getting up in age

Hi teachers,

1. 'He's getting up in age' Is it a common phrase or an idiom.

2. I learned one sentence which is 'He's getting on in years' Are they the same?

1. Not as common as #2, certainly.
2. I think we more usually say simply 'He's getting on.'
