Getting shook up

Hi

Could you please tell me if the phrase "getting shook up" is appropriate for everyday speech -- I mean, it's not too slangy?

Thanks, MM.

One more question (and thanks for bearing with me.)

Would you say that very informal borders on the slang? Many of my dictionaries define slang so. I mean, if a college student uses "getting shook up" in his essay, do you think he is likely to be penalized?

Yes. You might hear it used in very casual speech, but it is not standard English.
