Getting by

Hi everyone

A:How are you doing today?
B:getting by.

I like giving presents and I also like being given them (or by them).

Question

1. What is the mean "getting by?"

2. I know that we do not use by them on the sentence. why can't we use "by them" on the sentence?

I wish you have a wonderful new year.

Thanks in advance
