Getting better

My son is in reception. I want to tell him that he is getting better with both reading and writing.

I am confused as to which one is natural and why

You are getting better day by day

Or

You get better day by day

'You are getting better day by day' is the more natural thing to say.

The continuous tense reflects the continuous progress he is making.
