Gets/Is held back

Al comes out of the bathroom to see John flirting with Tonya at the bar. Al gets/is held back from running up there.

Are both "gets" and "is" correct in the context? Which one would you go with?

anonymous Are both "gets" and "is" correct in the context? Neither version convinces me that there is a connection between that and the sentence that precedes it. At first I thought he might have been held back by, for example, suddenly remembering he had left his phone in the restroom.
