Get your own back on

Hi

I want to know if the idiom "get one's own back on someone/something" common in AmE? I am aware that BrE speakers use it often.

Thanks,

Tom

  • We have "Put your back into it", but that means "Exert all your (physical) effort".
  • I doubt that it involves the idea found in the idiom you posted.

The idiom "turn one's back on someone" is common. But I've never heard the idiom as you posted it.

Get your own back = Get revenge, retaliate, get payback.
I just asked an American if she understood the phrase, and got a blank look. I had no idea that it isn't used in AmE. (I wonder how often I say things that nobody around me understands. Probably far more often than I realize.
