Get the mean of sentence

The costume institute of the Museum of Modern Art in New York did a retrospective of twenty-five years' of his work in 1983--- a first for a living designer.

I cant get good the meaning from this sentence. Only verb in the sentence is just "did" . can you write me it to another form so that I percieve easily. I am also confused with clause which "a first for a living designer".

and secondly, can you tell me what the meaning of that "Not one to rest on his laurels"
