Get started early

Dear folks,

Please help me write an idiomatic English sentence.

Actually, I am sure it is a very trivial matter to native speakers,

but not sure that the sentence below will sound natural,

when I mean I got started with it from my early childhood.

I got started with it early.

Does this sentence work itself for what I would like to say above?

I would be pleased with any tip on this (kind of) question.
