Get or gets

Hi teachers, I need some help with this confusion I'm dealing with.

My friend and I were playing a game and discussing about some various strategies to finish it as fast as possible and he suddenly asked me this "does that trick work if you abandon the gate.' I'm so confused whether this is correct or not, should it be will that trick work if you abandon the gate?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know what it means to abandon the gate, and I don't know what the trick is, but both ways are OK, as far as I can tell.
