get it replaced / replace it

"He had problems with it and wanted to get it replaced."

Teachers, is it possible to change the sentence above to "He had problems with it and wanted to replace it." without changing the meaning the speaker suggested in the original sentence?

Top answer

" Usually the action (replacement) would be done by someone else, when "get" or "have" are used in these passive constructions. " This would mean to a larger extent that the replacement was done directly by him. Thus, IMO, this isn't a perfect equivalence.

Marius, I've come across another "get sth pp" construct and it is "I got the kids settled down for the night."

In this sentence, it doesn't seem like someone else settled the kinds down for the speaker, though.
