get in/get back

Hello,
Do they both work in: "I am sorry for the late reply, but I got in/back at 11 PM last night" and "I'll help you write your essay, but I don't know what time I'll get in/back"? I don't know why I have a stronger preference for "in" in the first and "back" in the second.
