Get & got

Why do we use got and not get in the following example?

- It is really time we got round to painting the house. (why not get?)

Yes, it seems that you would be correct.
What is confusing is that normally one only uses "got" as in the sentence.
If one used get it would sound very strange and not fluent. So why do we only use "got"?

You misunderstood something. Please read the thread again. Mr. M. has already said you can use either get or got.
