Get back?

The following definition is taken from this link: http://stevetilford.com/2013/08/05/half-wheeling/

If you don’t understand the definition of half-wheeling, it is the action by an individual, when he or she rides beside you, when you are riding two by two, and is always just enough ahead of you that you feel like you are always trying to catch up or get back even with them.

My question is this:

What does "get back" mean? Would you please give me a synonym?

Thank you
