Get ahead of bill meaning?

I know what the other 'get ahead' means, but to get ahead of bills or payments, I can't seem to discern its meaning.

Thank you.

I just want to add a bit to what Clive has said. A person might say this after having a period of time where they struggled with paying their bills, and now they have caught up and are paying them down a bit.

In American English it means...not to have to live "hand to mouth" ...you have a bit more for the next month.
