Get a read on sth

Hello everyone.
I just wanted to ask about the expression "get a read on sth". What does that mean? Is that equivalent to "get a grasp of sth"?
Thanks

I'd say your equivalant is okay, but I tend to take "read" a bit more literally. Of course it may be absolutely literal, as in getting a read[ing] from some sort of indicator, or dial, or display. But I usually hear it as checking out some specific details, which may be spacial or dimensional, or perhaps alphanumeric.

  • I suppose it could also be to get a general update on the status of some project or specific item.
