Get a hold of/have a hold on

Hi,

1) “My physics tutor really helped me get a hold of the main principles.” (‘understand the main principles’)

“I think that I have a pretty good hold on the main principles of physics.” (“understand them”)

I’m not sure if the second one is correct but I definitely heard it somewhere.

2) Can I say that ‘I broke out in a rask on my thighs’ or is it better to say that ‘a rask broke out on my thighs’?

Thank you.

Top answer

1) I would say the second sentence is incorrect. " makes more sense to me. 2) I would write "My thighs broke out in a rash".

  • 2) I would write "My thighs broke out in a rash".
  • "A rash broke out on my thighs" is correct too.
  • "Rask" does not exist apart from being a family name I believe.

The second one is fine, but the first should have "ahold of", not "a ho
