GET A FREE RIDE ONE WAY

0 Hi,02br
00Someone could explain to me the exact meaning of this sentence (on capital letters) I have read on Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley"?:02br
00 'I stopped to pay toll and the the man leaned out the window. "Go on", he said, "it's on the house. I seen you go through the other way a little ago. I seen the dog. I knew you'd be back. YOU GET A FREE RIDE ONE WAY."02br
02br
00 Thanks in advance, Jo. 0-

0 Apparently this is a toll in which you pay going in each direction. The toll taker is not collecting the toll on his return trip - so "one way" of his two-way trip was free (no charge). "On the house" is another way to say that you will not be charged for it.
