Gesture vs confession

My husband summoned his courage to reveal the truth to our family. He sincerely apologized to our children and me about his embezzlement of company's funds. This gesture/confession on his part caught me by surprise.

I think 'gesture' is not correct. I believe "confession" is the word that should be used. Am I right?

Thanks.
