Gerund/infinitive

Hi Everyone,

Is there something wrong with this sentence?

Competitors typically do a superficial job getting to know customers and failing to attain an intimate, personal relationship with them.

Is 'failing' used correctly? Or, should it be changed to 'fail'?

Thank you so much to those who can help me with this!

I think "failing" is used incorrectly here. Used like this, it gives an illogical meaning to the sentence. I understand that you want to keep "get" and "fail" in balance, but you should do it with "do" and "fail".

So, the correct sentence would be:

Competitors typically do a superficial job getting to know customers and fail to attain an intimate, personal relationship wit
