Gerund with an article?

Look at the following sentence taken from Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness":

"The conquest of the earth, which mostly means the taking it away from those who have a different complexion ..."

The word "taking" here is a gerund, not a noun derived from the verb "take", because it has a direct object "it" (be it a noun, one should write "the taking of it"), yet it is used with a definite article. Is it permissible grammatically?
