Gerund with a preceding negative

I've been told that, in the following sentence, the "its" should be "it". My research informs me that, as the word "it" is preceding a gerund, it should take the possessive form. However, is this rule modified by the presence of the negative "not"?

Mary often settles for her first effort, despite its not being her best effort.

Thank you.
