why can some verbs take the gerund without a determiner (he stopped studying the material, he finished studying the material, etc) while for others it sounds strange and incorrect without (he ended studying the material, he abandoned studying the material) yet proper with (he ended his studying of the material, he abandoned his studying of the material)?
thank you
