Grammar

gerund or present participle?

It seems there are conflicting views among grammar teachers about the question as shown in the following example sentences. Could you help clarify what 'telling people...' 'telling my dad...' are?

I have trouble(problems, a hard time, difficulty) telling people how I feel.
I feel weird telling my dad I love him

Top answer

Anonymous I have trouble(problems, a hard time, difficulty) telling people how I feel. Of course, "I have trouble" can be a complete sentence. "Have" is the verb and "trouble" is the object.
