Grammar

gerund or infinitive , present perfect or past simple

Hello

I am about to leave the hotel I was staying for my holidays

Shall I say
I' ve been very happy staying here.
I was very happy staying here.
I' ve been very happy to stay here.
I was very happy to stay here.

I think present perfect is better because I am still in the hotel and I think gerund is better

I think present perfect is better because I am still in the hotel and I think gerund is better As far as describing your experience with a hotel stay is concerned, chances are, " I' ve been very happy staying here", is not the appropriate response, not that it is wrong; it is just too textbook and it is used in the wrong context in my opinion. I think most people would say, when greeted by the hotel staff: " we hope you've enjoyed your stay", the natural choice of words would be something like:" I've enjoyed my stay very much. Thank you".

  • The participle use seems reluctant because it " staying" offers a sense of presence or continuance.
  • Now let's say you went to London on a six-month assignment a month ago.
