gerund or else?

Reginald: Yeah, different languages, corresponding to different ethnic groups. Yeah. And, er, there are different dialects in some languages, yeah.
Leslie: And can … can people understand the other languages, or do… does each sort of group tend to speak its own only?
Reginald: Each group tends to speak its own, English being the only official language every person understands

Are "corresponding" and "being" both gerunds?

Typically an -ing form of a verb is only a gerund if it stands where a subject or object noun phrase normally stands.

They are present participles.

Unless you are studying grammar as an end in itself, or are required by your teacher to distinguish between gerunds and present participles, I see little value in the distinction for people wishing to learn English. I normally use the expression '-ing words/forms' for both.

Yes. The -ing forms do sound like verbs quite often.

As long as they are not gerunds (which are used in sentences where nouns would be used), call them (present) participles.

"spotting" is a participle here. It's in a typical grammatical patt
