Gerund and passive infinitive

#1 My plants need trimming.

#2 My plants need to be trimmed.

Are these sentence correct and have same meaning??

#3 When you go driving with your friends, you need to take turns at the wheel for safety.

Can we use gerund (taking) in #3?
