Gerund

When do we use gerunds? I know there are some grammar rules on that topic but it quite hard to remember all those rules.
Can we intuitively sense when we have to use gerunds?

Hi Philip,

Thanks for the link. I have just read the gerund section but I still can't grasp when to use gerund.
E.g. Both of my sisters are afraid of being alone in the dark
Both of my sisters are afraid to be alone in the dark
Both of my sisters are afraid of to be alone in the dark
All sentences seem fine by me but to my understanding only the first sentence is correct.
