gerund

Hi,

Can you explain the difference.
Usually we use: go+ gerund

Why is it wrong to say?:
Yesterday I went playing football with my friends.
Why do I have to use WENT TO PLAY ?

Anonymous Yesterday I went playing football with my friends. I don't see anything wrong with it. "I went to play football" is a bit higher register.
