Gerund...?

Hi,

in a class test I had the following sentence:

He was shocked seeing her dressed like that.

I was wondering if maybe you could tell me whether this sentence is correct in written English and give me an explanation - I didn't find anything comparable in Swan's grammar, but I am not very good with grammar rules anyway...

Thank you!

This is a participle phrase and of course seeing is not a gerund here. Two sentences have been joined to form one simple sentence. He saw her dressed like that.

The sentence is actually not very natural. The expected is:

He was shocked to see her dressed like that.

'See' is an instantaneous perception.
