It's not an English surname, but I believe that it refers to Adrien de Gerlache, a Belgian explorer. He was from the French speaking part of Belgium. My guess is that it would be pronounced something "Jer-lash".

  • Jer as in the first syllable of the name Jeramiah, and lache would be pronounced like the English word "lash".

Thank youJohn Paris!

I should have provided the context. This is what I found in Wikipedia.

Baron Adrien Victor Joseph de Gerlache de Gomery (2 August 1866 – 4 December 1934) was an officer in the Belgian Royal Navy who led the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897 to 1899.

Thanks a lot.
