Genitive or Attributive?

I've numbered all sentences below to make things easier. Which numbers are correct, and which numbers are incorrect? Thanks a mil!


1. The Arkansas' mayor resigned Tuesday.
2. Arkansas' Mayor John Doe resigned Tuesday.

3. The Arkansas's mayor resigned Tuesday.
4. Arkansas's Mayor John Doe resigned Tuesday.


OR

5. The Arkansas mayor resigned Tuesday.

Hi, victo, I think both are correct, but in my experience it's more common to drop the possessive. Also, I've always thought the second "s" (following the apostrophe) to be optional. Rgdz, - A.

I think both are correct, but in my experience it's more common to drop the possessive.

Also, I've always thought the second "s" (following the apostrophe) to be optional.
